ศึกษาหลักเกณฑ์และองค์ประกอบของการออกแบบแผนที่ ลักษณะการจัดข้อมูลเชิงคุณภาพและเชิงปริมาณ เพื่อทำเป็นแผนที่เฉพาะเรื่อง เน้นการใช้โปรแกรมทางคอมพิวเตอร์ในการจัดทำ การออกแบบแผนที่และการปรับปรุงคุณภาพแผนที่ เช่น การใช้ GPS และซอฟท์แวร์ Mobile Mapping การใช้เครื่องมือมัลติมีเดียต่าง ๆ รวมทั้งให้นักศึกษาเรียนรู้การสร้าง Web Pages การติดต่อ การเผยแพร่แผนที่ในระบบอินเตอร์เน็ตเพื่อให้ทันสมัยต่อการนำเสนองานและการสื่อสารในโลกแห่งยุคไร้พรมแดน

Course Learning Objectives

After completing GEO 3603, students should understand and be comfortable with applying cartographic design principles; applying basic layout and typography principles; selecting map projections and coordinate systems for maps at various scales; selecting and applying basic statistical mapping methods; understanding principles of cartographic generalization; mapping terrain from digital elevation data; using professional raster and vector graphics, GPS and mapping software, and creating maps with Google Map.

Introduction. Physical earth surface - geoid - ellipsoid. Geographical co-ordinates. Plane co-ordinates. 

Principles of map projections. Study of map distortions.

Transformations between cartographic systems. Measurements from maps(measurements of length-area).

Data structures (data models, vector-raster data structures, raster to vector conversion).

Data collection (digitisation from paper maps, manual-automated digitisation, data editing). 

GPS data collection and Mobile Mapping: Collect points, lines and polygon. Input feature and attribute data.

Digital data representation (digital mapping, the color and computer display, color separation, cartographic applications and multi-media, electronic map-atlas). Cartographic data exchange.

Internet Multimedia Mapping: Web page creation for Interactive 2D and 3D map by using basic HTML and KML language. Import a spreadsheet of lat/long coordinates to Google Earth.  Pop-up balloons, icons, and paths.

Getting creative, add information to your personal profile, and customize how the web page looks.
